“Many people think it is impossible to recapture the magic when you wait too long between sequels. Twenty years after “Dumb and Dumber,” I can say that its sequel, “Dumb and Dumber To” achieves the impossible. No, not by recapturing the magic, but by hitting rock bottom while being over-the-top at the same time. “Dumb and Dumber To” is not just over-the-top, it is on another planet looking down at the top through a high-powered telescope. Five minutes into watching it, and I wanted to be on another planet too.”I loved the original “Dumb and Dumber.” I think it is Jim Carrey’s best movie. “Dumb and Dumber To” is easily his worst, and might be the year’s worst too. The first movie was appropriately dumb, but this one is brain dead. There is no subtlety or restraint to anything. Good comedy, even raunchy slapstick, should be like a precision scalpel. This movie is like a machete hacking incessantly at the dead horse. This is what the directors, the Farrelly Brothers, have become. Hacks.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back and are probably the only things in this movie older than the jokes. They have gone from being edgy, comedy icons to being awkward dads embarrassing their kids with groan worthy humor. I was embarrassed for them while watching this movie. I was embarrassed for myself while watching this movie. The only part I enjoyed was when I left to pee.
Speaking of bathrooms, that is where most of the jokes come from. The movie’s climax takes place inside of one. Half the jokes involve excrement, which is appropriate because the writing is excrement. That is too nice. Excrement has a purpose and stinks less. The only good jokes in this movie are the ones they stole from the first movie.
This is not the first follow-up to “Dumb and Dumber.” A prequel, “Dumb and Dumberer,” premired in 2003. Audiences recoiled at the idea of different actors in the lead roles, “Dumb and Dumber To” was trying to make up for that. These are not the same actors either. Like the no-name actors in the prequel, Carrey and Daniels are putting on the same costumes and doing bad impressions of the guys from the original.
“Dumb and Dumber To” gets “to” ruined childhoods out of ten.
