Campus Greenhouses are Growing “Green”

A new initiative on campus is allowing marijuana to be grown in campus greenhouses.

Starting next semester, cannabis will be grown and used for medicinal purposes, educational practices and culinary consumption.

The school signed off on the bill last month to allow its legality, and the marijuana seeds have been purchased for planting. Students will be involved in monitoring how the plant grows and how to maintain such a unique environment.

Jane Marie, junior biology major, will oversee the green production over the summer through a specialized garden club called The Horticultural Cannabis Society, or THCs.

“Growing marijuana will allow me to gain knowledge in a plant that will benefit humans and the environment,” Marie said.

Not only will growing marijuana allow for botanical practices, but it will be used in the CPS Cafe as an ingredient in many dessert items. Sarah Moken, manager of the cafe and charge of the campus marijuana movement, is excited to create cookies and brownies that contain more than just a sugar rush.

“Brownie Monday” will be initiated next semester and brownies with local weed ingredients will be sold every Monday until supplies run out.

Moken is most interested to “use local ingredients to create special baked food for students.”

Not only will the herb be used in the kitchen but it will be sold at the campus clinic as a medicine for a discounted student price. For those who need medicine but can’t afford top-notch healthcare, medical marijuana will be a healthy and economical alternative.

Jimmy Joplin, sophomore psychology major, wants to “use the weed to make us feel better.”

Legalized through a new educational initiative which college campuses across the nation are testing, UW-Stevens Point is honored to be involved in a social study that has so many potential benefits across the campus.

Planting will begin this spring and will be ready for commercial use in the upcoming fall semester. Inquiries about the issue may be directed towards Sarah Moken at smoke420@uwsp.edu
