A Look into Sports: Volleyball Continues Dominance

Volleyball continues to roll

The University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point women’s volleyball team opened up conference play with a 3-0 sweep of UW-Platteville this past Wednesday.

Senior Kelly Cefalu led the squad with 14 kills on the night while senior Bri Piepenbrok totaled 21 digs for the Pointers.

The team then hosted matches against North Park and Elmhurst in the CCIW/WIAC Crossover tournament on Friday where they swept North Park but fell in five sets to Elmhurst.

Cefalu led the charge with 35 kills on the day while freshman Abby Majercik continued her strong first season totaling 82 assists throughout play.

While the team could not pull out a win against Elmhurst, three players were still able to compile double-digit digs in the strong showing.

The Pointer’s record now stands at 17-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Strong showing from Cross Country

The Pointer women’s cross country team was able to claim a fourth place finish at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday while the men came away with a sixth-place outing.

Junior Kathy Derks led the charge for the women with a team-high 15th place finish.

Freshman Matt Stelmasek ran his way to a team-best sixth place finish.

Freshman Bailey Wolf, sophomore Bailey Boudreau and junior Emily Schlebecker were also able to come away with individual performances in the top 50 of 370 finishers in the women’s competition.

Other Pointers with top 50 performances in the men’s heat included senior Luke Johnston and junior Alex Richardson who notched a 31st and 45th place finish respectively.

Women’s soccer keeps win streak alive

The UWSP women’s soccer team was able to keep their win streak going with a dominating 6-0 victory at home over Lawrence University.

Sophomore Kortnee Haas had a strong outing for the Pointers as she totaled two goals of her own while assisting on two others.

The Pointers outshot their opponent 27-3 on a day that included contributions from a large amount of the team.

Other contributions included a goal from sophomore Elise Thuot who started the scoring.

Sophomore Olivia Bohnert scored her second goal of the season with freshman Kassidy Spees and junior Danielle Thomason adding the final two goals of the game.

The team has climbed their way back from an 0-5 start to now find themselves sitting at 3-5 on the year.

UWSP football stays unbeaten

The Pointer football team kept their record unblemished in a 44-19 win over Adrian.

Junior running back Christian Almonte got the scoring started with a 28-yard rushing touchdown followed by a six-yard receiving touchdown from senior quarterback Kyle Larson.

After an injury to Larson, junior Ryan Swigart took snaps for the remainder of the second half and lead the Pointers down the field. Capping off with his lone touchdown pass of the day to senior Jared Pankow.

The Pointers had a strong defensive performance highlighted by a forced fumble caused by Tanner Beaman that junior Kevin Sanchez scooped up and scored for a 90-yard fumble recovery touchdown.

Sophomore Juleyan Givens also added a 58-yard interception return touchdown to the strong defensive showing.

The Pointers will take their undefeated start into Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they prepare for their next game on the road at UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 1.
