UWSP Becomes a Wisconsin-Only Campus

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students have been distraught over the recent administrative decision to deny all future out-of-state students from attending the university.

This decision is a shock to many out-of-state students, as this specific group makes up 10 percent of the student population.

Shelly Gibb, director of Recruitment, works in the admissions office at UWSP. Gibbs reluctantly explained that out-of-state students will no longer be eligible to attend UWSP because of their academic inferiority.

“Most of the students that have low GPAs on campus are from Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan. If I’m really being honest, it’s mostly the Illinois students, but we must discriminate against all out-of-state students to be fair,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs also admitted that out-of-state students are an embarrassment to the university because they have not received adequate preparation for college.

Wyatt Pierson, senior communication major, grew up in Chicago, Illinois. Though opposed to the ban, Pierson said he was not surprised by the administration’s decision.

“The administration claims that they are banning out-of-state students for their poor academic reasons, but I don’t buy it. I think they want to ban us for being Bears or Vikings fans. I cannot tell you how many rude looks I get when I wear a Bears t-shirt in public,” Pierson said.

The administration denies Pierson’s claims that the university is banning out-of-state students based off the football team they support. Pierson, along with other out-of-state students, has begun organizing a protest against the administration’s decision.

Out-of-state students from across campus will gather at Old Main on April 3, in hopes of changing the administration’s decision.

Lexi Cornell, junior natural resources major, is one of the many students that will be attending the protest in early April. As a Minnesota resident and an academically successful student, the administration’s decision outrages Cornell.

“I feel that this new ban is a way for Wisconsinites to attack students from different states. I have yet to see any evidence that out-of-state students do not perform as well as other students in the classroom. If anything, we perform better, and they’re just jealous,” Cornell said.

Gibbs denies Cornell’s claims that in-state students are jealous and believes that the ban will create a more conducive learning environment on campus.

“Truthfully UWSP is just better off without out-of-state students and we have to do what is best for the university,” Gibbs said.
