Student Organization Spotlight: DREAM
The on-campus club DREAM’s mission is to provide a safe space and advocate for disabled students. DREAM stands for Disability Rights, Education, Activism, and Mentoring.
DREAM works to support students with disabilities, acting as a mediator between the students and the Disability Resource Center (DRC).
“We work closely with the DRC. One of our advisors works for the DRC, and we bring up specific accessibility concerns noted by students,” said Gabi Magolski, a DREAM member and DREAM’s social media manager.
DREAM was founded last year on the idea of bringing disabled students together.
“There wasn’t really a place for us to meet other people who might have similar life experiences,” said Rue Wilson, president of DREAM.
Wilson wants DREAM’s message to reach the newer students on campus.
“There are a lot of disabled students, especially those newer to campus, who are kind of scared, there are a lot of things people don’t necessarily know about,” Wilson said.
You do not have to be a part of the disabled community to join DREAM. Any ally of the disabled community is welcome.
“It’s just about understanding the struggles that the disabled community goes through and empathizing, acknowledging that this community exists,” Magolski said.
To join DREAM, students can attend their weekly meetings. For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom option is available. Students can also join the DREAM Discord server for updates on events and meeting info.
DREAM meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in DUC room 062.
With a wide array of coloring pages and fidget toys, DREAM’s meetings are open discussions, focusing first on business and planning events, then moving to more fun topics like show and tell.
DREAM also hosts monthly swims on the second Tuesday of each month, following their meetings.
