Students of UWSP voted and ranked their top 10 choices for Halloween movies that are a must-watch this fall. Over the course of five days, a Google survey received over 180 student submissions.

Ranking in first place, “Hocus Pocus” won with a whopping 26 out of 182 votes; 14.2% of students agree that this movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy is the number one Halloween movie to watch.

“Halloweentown” is UWSP’s second favorite movie for the Halloween season. The 1998 film has proven to be a classic and is favored by students, likely because it used to air on Disney Channel.

Tim Burton’s “Coraline” made third place with 18 votes, although many people anecdotally say that it gave them nightmares as a child. The Other Mother must’ve really made an impact!

For fourth place, “Beetlejuice” and the categorized “Scooby-Doo Movies” are tied. Each with 15 votes, 8.2% individually said that these two movies were their favorite.

“Ghostbusters” comes in fifth place with 13 votes. The 1984 movie seems to be relatable to university students, likely due to the beginning storyline.

10 votes made “Scream” place sixth. Ghostface’s role in the now 6-movie franchise really impacted student views.

“The Addams Family” with the iconic Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia starring as Morticia and Gomez hit seventh place. The original movie holds a special place in UWSP’s heart.

On a more gory note, the “Saw” movies placed eighth in the race for movies to watch for Halloween. With the tenth movie in the franchise coming out on September 29, it’s no surprise this collection made the top ten.

The traditional “Halloween” from 1978 directed by Rob Zombie was no shocker, but how low it placed on the list was. The character Michael Myers is known so well in the slasher genre that it’s remarkable that it only made ninth place.

The last of the favorites, in tenth place, is “Insidious.” The movie was released in 2010. With many students still young when it was released, the scare factor of this movie did not stop it from making the top 10 Halloween movies list.
