Basement Brewhaus Gets a Makeover
UWSP’s Basement Brewhaus, located on the lower level of the DUC, has undergone interior design updates and has plans to continue making changes to benefit students and other customers.
“We just had our muralist finish the mural. That was our big project for this summer and fall,” said Abby Morgan, student manager of the Basement Brewhaus.
The mural was painted by Victoria Livingston, a UWSP student pursuing a BFA in studio art.
In addition to the mural, other structural changes were made.
“We did some light painting to brighten up the space and bring more life back to the Brewhaus,” said Morgan.
Modernizing the space was a goal of the work that was done.
Morgan said that new shelves have been installed in the space, which will house books as part of a planned free library.
The moving of the old performance space was another step in updating the space, with a performance stage coming in the future.
Morgan said the Basement Brewhaus is a great place for students to hang out, do work and/or play games with their friends. It has pool tables, dart boards, a foosball table and board games.
The Basement Brewhaus’ menu items include coffee, soups, bakery items and snack items. They also serve alcoholic beverages to those 21 and over. Their specialty drink menu changes twice per semester.
The Brewhaus also offers a variety of different events.
“We do a bunch of different events throughout the semester. We have trivia. Next semester our plan is to partner with different departments and clubs to get different themed trivias,” Morgan said.
Other events include movie nights, live music by student artists and open mic nights.
The Basement Brewhaus is a special place for Morgan.
“I found the Basement Brewhaus freshman year during covid. The Brewhaus was the place for me to go to step out and really be involved. I saw the chance to become a barista, and that really gave me a sense of belonging,” Morgan said.
The Basement Brewhaus is a place where Morgan has made friends. It has given her the chance to interact with people that she wouldn’t have been able to meet in other places.
“It’s a very comforting place for me,” Morgan said. “I think [it is] for a lot of people as well.”
Morgan graduates in spring 2024. Though she is sad to leave the Basement Brewhaus, what matters to her most is that she has left a positive mark on a place that means so much to her.
