TLC Extends Hours for Athletes
Athletes After Hours is a new Tutoring Learning Center (TLC) program that focuses on creating a time for tutoring outside of normal hours.
The program runs from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays in the CBB drop-in center to reach those who cannot make it during the daytime. Athletes After Hours is open to non-athletes as well.
Athletes After Hours also offers the chance to promote team camaraderie through the ability to study with teammates while also receiving personalized help. There are five tutors per session, each specializing in different subject areas, all in relation to STEM or writing.
“They [athletes] deserve just as much help as the students in here all of the time,” said Josie Voigt, a STEM Student Manager for the TLC.
Voigt explains the method of grouping learners together, allowing them to both make connections and help themselves. “You are your own advocate now and we just want to help give people the skills to advocate for themselves and take their learning into their own hands,” she said.
Josh Lahay, a student who attends Athletes After Hours regularly, said “it has really helped to improve my grades and given me the tools to study better on my own too.”
Outside of this program, the TLC also hosts regular tutoring sessions, specializing in either STEM or writing.
Regular TLC hours are 9-5 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and 9-1 p.m. on Fridays, located in CCC 234. They offer one-on-one tutoring, small group tutoring, and courses for academic success skills.
For those who cannot stop by, the TLC also has the Online Writing Lab (OWL) where students can submit papers virtually and get feedback within 48 hours.
Jennifer White, Assistant Director for the TLC, said the TLC is trying to reach a broader group of students. “We want the students that have a 2.0 to come see us, see if we can bump that up,” she said.
“I think a lot of people, when they come into college, feel like they have to figure it out by themselves and nobody actually figures anything out by themselves. We all use resources, so part of college is making those connections,” said White.
