Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz visited UWSP Monday afternoon as part of a Get Out the Vote campaign event.

The event took place on the final day of campaigning before the Tuesday, Nov. 5 election. Walz is on a battleground state travel blitz to encourage voters to cast their ballots for Kamala Harris.

UWSP students lined up outside the DUC before the event to get cleared by United States Secret Service agents. Each student wanted to see Gov. Walz for their own reasons.

“I am here to vote for my little sister,” said Lily Hahn, a UWSP senior. “She’s five years old and I want to vote for her future, so she can have a safe future.”

Wisconsin is one of the most important swing states this election cycle. Hahn is optimistic but said that it is a little nerve-wracking being in a swing state.

One student wanted to hear what Gov. Walz had to say about the working class.

“I want to see what Tim Walz has to offer for the working class of America,” said Angel Nicholas H. Rodriguez, a UWSP student. “Coming from a working-class background, I really hope we get represented as well, not just the middle-class because the working class is what builds up America.”

Another student was concerned about the future of their rights.

“With this election, my rights as a queer woman are on the line,” said Marcie Davis, a UWSP freshman. “I just think it’s important for people to be informed,” she added.

UWSP students also helped organize the event.

“It was an incredible process. We have a great team here in University Centers, and College Democrats is super excited to be here and be able to host such amazing people and an amazing campaign,” said Mason Garrigan, President of UWSP College Democrats.

Garrigan also introduced Gov. Walz at the event.
